Chapter Sixteen

I had plenty of experience snooping around in the dark. In fact, the night was my favorite time to do my work. I liked being able to collect information under the cover of darkness. Not only was it easier to avoid onlookers who had long gone to bed, but the air wasn’t so oppressively hot and I didn’t have to worry about my skin frying in the sun.

Many of my jobs required me to drive around at night, searching for people who liked to do their work under the cover of darkness, too. This was prime time for busting lovers out on a secret tryst or for catching bail-skippers who went from the county jail back to the streets for work.

On one of these such excursions, I found myself at a swinger’s club after following a couple of married lovers to a large house shielded by a long driveway. I had a rather good camera lens for taking extreme close-ups but nothing that could give me the shot I needed. So, being an anonymous man, I crashed the party with my lapel camera to finish the job and close the case.

It’s odd enough to snoop around a neighborhood, looking for a subject’s house. It’s another thing to snoop around a stranger’s home in search of scandal. My heart was racing as I moved from room to room, trying to find my subjects. Eventually, I found my subject giving his lover a sensual massage. I was able to capture it on film as I declined to join them in their partially nude rubdown. The house had many more secrets to tell, but I was not getting paid for any of them, so I went straight home to print my photos.

This was decidedly different. If I had been caught at the swinger’s party, I would have been pushed out the door. If anyone there knew what I had really been after, I would have been met with pleas to keep their secrets to myself. I would be offered handsome sums of money to shut up. Someone might try to ruffle my feathers, but ultimately, I would be okay.

Here, I was searching for a secret that would destroy the life of the suspect. With solid evidence, no amount of riches could protect our guy from prison. Even if they didn’t stay in for long, their reputation would be destroyed. There would be no way to resume a normal life after a murder trial with damning evidence. There would be too much at stake to let me move along with my investigation. I couldn’t get caught.

Knowing the gravity of the situation didn’t stop my urge to investigate. It must have been hubris fueling this desire to get the job done. Otherwise, it was a task for an insane person.

Somewhere, there was either a snake or a stockpile of venom vials. It had to be on site, because there just wasn’t enough time for our killer to pick it up at a second location. Right now, there was evidence sitting around and I wanted to find it before it was swept away.
